A Window on the World: Views of 19th Century Life in American Schoolbooks, 1823-1852

This flat-bottomed boat on a large American river is carrying animals symbolic of the west: elk, buffalo and bear. These animals are perhaps on their way to a traveling menagerie (zoo), a popular form of entertainment at the time. By the early 1820s there were 30 or more traveling menageries touring the eastern states.
