Orra Sees Windsor Castle

Orra did not accompany Edward to Oxford, so spent the day with Mrs. Tappan and other travel companions visiting Windsor Castle.

June 21:

In our loneliness, Mrs. T. & I went with Mr. & Mrs. Baker to Windsor, a very fine ride in the country. Visited the castle . . . . It is on the Thames, a delightful prospect all about. . . . [In] the grand reception rooms, tapestry & paintings. A splendid Malachite vase presented to Victoria by the emperor Nicholas of Russia . . . .

. . . Passing through the cloisters we ascended the round tower, compasses 150 paces from the little park to the top of the flag staff 295 feet. . . 220 steps to the top.

Prisoners were formerly kept here: John king of France, David king of Scotland. 1405 James I, the past king of Scotland who, on his way to France for his education was taken & kept here 18 years. . . . The stables were to be shown but an extra ticket was necessary. 120 horses & numerous carriages, some for the children. . . . Kennel for the fancy dogs, one for a cashmere sheep dog from India, a present to her majesty.
