zoomable artifact image here

Edward Hitchcock began his collection of fossil footprints in 1835. At its peak in 1875, well after Hitchcock's death, the collection of 21,773 tracks was among the largest and most valuable collections known worldwide. The collection was housed for a time in Woods Cabinet, which was in the Octagon, but moved to Appleton Cabinet when it was built for this purpose in 1855.
