Edward Hitchcock's Track Book

zoomable artifact image here

Edward Hitchcock created several of these "track books," some quite small, by carefully prying apart thin, delicate layers of rock that show the impression of footprints on the top layer and the increasingly indistinct shapes of the prints in successive layers below. As a teaching device, it was a rather literal example of the Book of Nature, a central image to botany and geology during the 19th century.
