The Geology around Amherst College

zoomable artifact image here

This hand-colored map was originally part of Edward Hitchcock's Reminiscences of Amherst College, published in 1863, shortly before his death in February 1864. The key to rock types is in the upper left. Notice that he used local Native American names for the mountains. He thought such names superior in grace and dignity to those commonly used at the time. However, as was the case for some of the other names he bestowed, "Mt. Mettawampe" never caught on. The site is still called Mt. Toby today.
