"Confluence of the Connecticut and Deerfield Rivers," Orra White Hitchcock

zoomable artifact image here

Orra White Hitchcock accompanied her husband Edward Hitchcock on geological excursions throughout the Connecticut River Valley. She drew a series of landscape views that were published in Edward's report on the state's geology. This view, looking north, shows the Connecticut River on the right and the Deerfield River on the left. A prominent company, Pendleton's Lithography, printed many of Orra's pieces, including this one. Although intended as scientific illustrations, the landscape views are often more picturesque than topographically correct.
